I try not to memorize my lines too early. For me it’s better to internalize them first. Actually hiding my character’s lines and saying what I think she’d say or want to say and not dare to say. This helps me discover subtext. And, by the end I usually end up knowing the lines. If I have to be exact on the text, as a last step, I’ll sometimes write down my lines from memory and then check it against the text.
I feel like I can answer this question two different ways so here are my two answers.
a. Show up relaxed and bring yourself to the role. No one can do it like you so don’t try to please them or be what you think they want, just make this your role. If it’s not what they’re looking for, that’s okay. They will remember you. They’ll bring you back. Uta Hagen said “Instead of losing yourself in the part, find yourself in the part”. Work on yourself in between auditions, in between roles. Your body is your instrument, learn how to work with it. Learn how to relax, breathe, move… Learn how to work with your mind, how to relax your mind, meditate, work on your confidence, your self-talk, if you need to. Treat the down period like an athlete treats the off-season- Training Camp. EXPLORE. LEARN. GROW.
b. Most of the time I have to audition and since I don’t live in LA, that means I tape myself at home. The +’s are, I can do it as many times as I want to. The -’s are, there is no casting director to give me notes, direct me. I don’t get to go in the “room” and meet people so there’s no energy, connection and I have to focus on technical things like lighting, framing the shot, picking the take, downloading it to vimeo, etc...
A coach I had said this to me once- “If the job is for you, there is very little you can do to mess it up. If the job isn’t for you, there’s very little you can do to get it.” That freed me!
“Every audition is your opportunity to do what you love. Let it cost you something and don’t have any regrets when you leave the room.”
This can vary from $0 to some obscene number. What I will say is money is NOT the reason to do this job. You gotta love Acting. For me, I needed to do this, acting was how I felt alive, how I felt free to express all that was inside. If you can imagine yourself doing anything else, then maybe acting isn’t the thing. My first teacher said “an actor works”. If you get the job, you do it. Paid or not (unless there’s nudity and that’s against what you want to do). Every job is a job where you can learn something, you can meet people, you can meet your next director, your next producer. I got connected to my manager from doing an unpaid short movie. I worked in an office for a long time to earn money in between jobs. Tons of people need to get jobs to help their income. There is no shame in that and on top of the money, another job is a new experience, a life experience. All experiences can ultimately help us in our work. For me, being an artist is not about money. It is about the craft and the community, finding our tribe, our support group, the ones we can learn from and the ones we can help grow. I love the world of acting. There are actors but there are also a lot of other people who work in our field. Costumers, grips, makeup artists. It is a community and all together we get to create something… hopefully something beautiful. That in itself is priceless.
I don’t think you have to go to school but talent alone can only get us so far. There are many ways to learn the craft. School, acting classes, learning on the job and the INTERNET. Read as much as you can about the craft, listen to podcasts with actors, youtube is an incredible resource. You can look up videos from legends like Michael Cain, have access to relaxation techniques from the National Theatre, vocal exercises. There is so much out there and it’s free! And work! Rehearse. Create your own work. It does not need to be produced or anything anyone will see. Have readings of plays with your friends, work on a monologue, write something. The point is, to learn and to work.
I’ve worked with dialect coaches for years. Learning how to say sounds differently, long “eeee’s”, always push the word “NOT”, add a bit of air after the “t’s”, practicing with a cork in my mouth to help me not move my mouth as much when I talk and also, finding my “American side”. There’s the technique but there’s also the personality. Giving myself permission to take my time with words, sounds, be “hoggier” helps lose the staccato and the “frenchness”.
What does it mean to you…?

This morning my flight from Detroit on American Airlines, was cancelled. I was re-booked and then that one got cancelled.
I found availability on Spirit and with my one-way ticket, I made it to the gate hopeful…. when an announcement was made that our flight could not board. One of their flight attendants didn’t make it but they were waiting for backup.
When the flight attendant arrived at the gate, everyone clapped and cheered out of relief… we could board!
When I got to my seat, Sincere (the flight attendant’s name) was standing in the row in front of mine, so after I sat down, I reached out to say thank you so much for making it and I really appreciated it.
Sincere lives in Detroit. She was supposed to head home after a six day stretch of work for a day off. But today when she landed in Detroit from Ft Lauderdale, she was asked to step in for a colleague so our flight wouldn’t be canceled. She said yes.
After boarding she found out her return flight from New York had now been canceled… and will now be stuck for a day or maybe two. I just happened to be next to her when she found out her flight was cancelled. No one else on our flight will know the sacrifice Sincere made, quietly, professionally… just so we wouldn’t get stuck.
So here’s to Sincere (a very appropriate name) who helped hundreds of us make our way home to NYC today just before this Blizzard touched down.
To @spiritairlines, please note what an incredible difference one of your amazing team members has made on this very difficult travel day.

Incredibly honored to work with the team @theinterview_nyt to lend my voice to the English voiceover of Madame Pelicot for this podcast.
Her story is haunting. Her spirit is beyond inspiring.
Gisele Pelicot on “The Interview” spoke with journalist Lulu Garcia-Navarro.
Repost @theinterview_nyt In 2020, Gisèle Pelicot husband, Dominique, was caught secretly filming up women’s skirts at a local supermarket near their home in southeastern France. After the police arrested him, they discovered videos and photographs of his wife being assaulted by at least 70 men — assaults that Mr. Pelicot had recorded and saved.
Ms. Pelicot did not know about the assaults until the police told her what they’d found because she had been drugged by her husband. When Mr. Pelicot and 50 men were prosecuted in a mass trial in 2024, she allowed the case to be open to the public, determined that the shame of rape not fall on victims. Her courage turned her into a feminist hero, inspiring women to support her at the courthouse and all over the world. “I think this trial echoed their suffering. They recognized themselves,” Ms. Pelicot said. All of the men were found guilty.
Ms. Pelicot has a new memoir out this month, “A Hymn to Life: Shame Has to Change Sides,” and she talked with @lulugnavarro about the book, her harrowing experience and how she has rebuilt her life on “The Interview.” Read, watch or listen at the link in our bio.

“My Friend Abby” was founded by Gillian Anderson in honor of her beautiful daughter Abby, who died by suicide at 15. Their mission: empower youth to support one another through peer-to-peer connection and mental health resources.
I first learned about Abby almost ten years ago through my boys’ sitter Delly. Her and I instantly connected. We loved to chat together about life-the small stuff and the big stuff. The good stuff and the hard stuff. During that time Delly told me about losing her friend Abby in high-school. How incomprehensible it was. How the whole community went into crisis mode and also how everyone came together. Years later, it was Abby and Gillian’s impact that inspired Delly to go back to school and become a social worker.
The evening was a beautiful reminder of the communities we can create when we open up to one another without shame or stigma. Here’s to the ripple effects we can all create by showing up for one another. Gillian, thank you for having me. Here’s to you, to your beautiful family and the community you have created. Here’s to Abby. 💛

Glimmers ✨ — a term from Deb Dana (licensed clinical social worker and leading expert in Polyvagal Theory) — are the tiny moments of joy, calm or connection. They happen every day, we just need to learn to notice them.
They don’t cancel out stress or hardship — they coexist with it.
They remind us that even on heavy days, small sparks of joy are possible. And the beauty? The more we notice them, the more we see them.
Try noticing them… maybe it’s the tap tapping of your dog’s paws on the hardwood floor? Maybe it’s… whatever it is… notice and maybe before you hit the sack tonight, write a couple of them down 💛💤
Thank you Jay Moon Fields @heywaitwithjay for telling me about this concept.🤍

✨ “Be a rainbow in somebody else’s cloud.” — Maya Angelou
Zoom in to the SOUL ON FIRE POSTER and you’ll see that in every square behind John is a person who showed up for him. His family. Friends. Nurses. Strangers. People who brought light into the darkest moments.
It reminded me of Maya Angelou who said:
“When I step onto a stage, I bring everyone who’s ever been kind to me with me… I’ve had rainbows in my clouds. And the thing to do is to prepare yourself to be a rainbow in somebody else’s cloud —somebody who may not look like you, call God the same name, or speak your language — but be a blessing to somebody.””
💚 Today is World Mental Health Day — a reminder that we all need one another.
If you can, go see SOUL ON FIRE this week. Bring your loved ones. Let it remind you of your rainbows… and the power we all have to be one for somebody else.

This is the true story behind the movie SOUL ON FIRE. In theaters this Friday Oct. 10th! Go see it! Bring your family! (Rated PG) RePosted from @johnoleary.inspires Nearly 40 years ago, a legendary broadcaster named Jack Buck changed the life of a little boy who was fighting for his next breath. That boy was me.
After I was burned on 100% of my body as a child, Jack didn’t just visit once—he kept showing up. Through simple, consistent acts of kindness, he reminded me that even in the darkest seasons, we are never truly alone.
This oldie-but-goodie from MLB shares that story: the bond between Jack Buck and “The Kid.” As I rewatched it, I was reminded that one person’s encouragement can alter the course of another’s life forever.
My hope is that as you watch, you’ll be inspired to show up for someone in your life today—because you never know the difference it might make.

Repost from @johnoleary.inspires: Portraying my parents—Denny and Susan O’Leary—was never going to be easy.
In the face of impossible odds, my parents anchored our family, believed in my recovery, and kept hope alive when it would have been far easier to give in to despair.
John Corbett and @stephshortstak didn’t just act those roles—they honored them. With every scene, they brought a grace, kindness, and sincerity that reminded me of Mom and Dad in ways words can’t fully capture.
I’m so grateful for who they are and what they’ve given to this story. I think you’ll see why in this behind-the-scenes look from Sony’s @affirmfilms… and even more so when the movie opens this fall.

Psychotherapist Dr. Joy Miller shared this chart with me, and I love how simply it helps us start noticing what sets us off. Triggers are so personal. We feel them in our minds and bodies—we get riled up or we shut down.
So next time you get triggered because your family “makes you” late for the airport (me tomorrow 🙋🏻♀️🤪) or a friend jumps straight into politics (I keep hearing about friendships lost over this)… maybe we can remember to pause, recognize what’s happening, and hopefully choose a more constructive or fun response.

I love a friend who reads out loud to me.
Many moons ago, I worked on a film with Jeff Bridges, Ryan Reynolds and Kevin Bacon. While we sat in hair & makeup, Jeff read to us out loud a few days in a row. The Dude—reading to you like it’s story time. How cool is that?
Afterwards, I told Kevin Bacon how beautiful I thought that was. He said, “Make sure to tell Jeff... he was worried he made a fool of himself.”
Isn’t that wild? Even Jeff Bridges gets self-conscious. Just like the rest of us…
After we wrapped Jeff sent the whole cast and crew a book of his pictures from the movie. The Dude is a giving man.
Don’t let fear stop you from sharing something close to your heart with someone else… it might be the best part of their day.
