The Creative Life

Behind action and cut, a different story unfolds.

At a Glance

Stephanie Szostak is a French-American actor whose career spans more than two decades across independent film, studio productions, stage, and network television, including The Devil Wears Prada, Iron Man 3, and the ABC hit series A Million Little Things.

Along the way, she has collaborated with acclaimed filmmakers and actors while building a body of work shaped as much by uncertainty as by opportunity.

Late Start. Early Break.

At twenty-nine, Stephanie took her first acting class. Within a year, she played the lead female role in two independent films that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.

The early momentum felt as if the path might unfold easily.

Her first feature film, Satellite, earned her Best Actress at the BendFilm Festival and received critical recognition in The New York Times.

For a moment, everything seemed to be falling into place. But unresolved music rights led to the film being pulled just as it began screening in independent theaters. It would take nearly a decade before its digital release.

That stop-and-go rhythm became a defining part of the journey, bringing both challenges and unexpected gifts.

On the Set

Stephanie’s first major studio production was a small role in The Devil Wears Prada, where she found herself working opposite Meryl Streep, an experience that was equal parts thrilling, intimidating, and deeply formative.

Her parents were impressed because, for once, she wasn’t playing a “dead” person.

Over the years, she worked alongside remarkable actors, observing how they prepared, collaborated, and trusted their own processes. Many embodied what it means to “bring yourself to the part,” something she was still learning.

Below are stills from projects and people who shaped her journey. From lead roles to one-day guest appearances, to a single line in a film — “Why not?” — each project brought its own joys and challenges.

Perspective

Acting is often seen as glamorous. The reality is highly unpredictable. Over 90% of my auditions end in silence. Not even a “no.”

Wins are exhilarating. They deserve to be celebrated. But as validating as they may feel, they do not define who we are… and, neither do the losses.

Whether we are actors, athletes, entrepreneurs, leaders, students, or parents, we all face the same tension: hard work, love, and dedication never guarantee the outcome.

The creative life makes peace with uncertainty.

It lives within a paradox: Confidence and doubt. Discipline and improvisation. Acceptance and drive.

It asks us to hold both.

The Gift in the Obstacle

Periods of self-doubt, rejection, and long stretches without work became unexpected turning points.

Time away from set created space to raise a family and strengthen her inner game.

Setbacks became invitations to rethink personal definitions of success.

The standstill of the pandemic led to speaking and a partnership with the mental health organization Give an Hour, which ultimately inspired her book SELF!SH.

What once appeared to interrupt the path ultimately expanded it.

The Story We Carry Forward

Life rarely follows the imagined script. But we still get to choose how to play the scene.

Through storytelling, reflection, and practical tools, Stephanie invites individuals to create their own Playbook and step fully into the roles of their lives with confidence, joy, and meaning.
